Father of eight seeks custody of quintuplet daughter

Custody battles are usually relatively private affairs. This is certainly better for the children involved, as they have usually already had enough to deal with emotionally, wondering about their future and feeling abandoned or perhaps forced to choose between parents. When a custody battle becomes public, the children often suffer more. This is the situation at least one girl and her siblings are probably facing after her parents' longtime dispute recently garnered reality TV and tabloid headlines.

According to sources, ex-spouses Jon and Kate Gosselin, whose life raising several children was chronicled in the TV series "Jon and Kate Plus 8," have had testy relations since their divorce in 2009. Their most recent dispute came when Jon contacted Pennsylvania's Child Protective Services and accused Kate of abusing the couple's 11-year-old daughter. Kate publicly countered Jon's claims and says she was the one who contacted CPS after Jon essentially kidnapped their daughter.

Kate continued with the reality TV show after she and Jon separated. The company that produced the show sued Jon for breach of contract, and he has had an ongoing dispute with the producers ever since. He now is claiming that the continued production of "Kate Plus 8" is adversely affecting the couple's minor children.

If a family law court were to agree with Jon, he could be awarded child custody. However, given his legal difficulties and trouble with Kate, it is unlikely Kate would not be allowed to continue as the custodial parent. Fortunately, child custody decisions are always made with the best interests of the children in mind. Among the considerations are the children's educational, health and emotional needs.
