Helping clients understand child support law in Massachusetts

Couples who are contesting their divorce in Massachusetts may find child support to be one of their major concerns. Generally, the non-custodial parent pay the child support amount that covers the expenses for the basic, educational and medical needs of the child. The amount is decided by a court after considering the incomes of both parents. The child support money is usually paid through the Department of Revenue, and the amount is directly deducted from the non-custodial parent's income source.

If the non-custodial parent fails to make the payment or refuses to pay, a complaint can be filed with a family court. If the accusations are found to be true, the non-custodial parent may be subject to enforcement measures, according to federal and Massachusetts child support law.

The punishments for such an offense range from income withholding to seizure of properties. Even the driver's license may get suspended, and a passport may not be issued or reissued. But, if the non-custodial parent is genuinely unable to pay the child support, the court may consider revising the amount or modifying the child support order in some other way.

Our law firm is experienced in successfully dealing with child support cases. We provide legal help when applying for child support, as well as seeking a modification in the child support order. We can also help our clients understand the law and provide them with options that may make things easier for them.

Our expert attorneys have handled difficult cases regarding collecting and revising of child support.
