Divorce filings surge in January after the holidays

Most residents of Springfield, Massachusetts, love to celebrate Christmas and the New Year with their families, enjoying the festive atmosphere and making happy memories. This festive feeling often ends when, according to reports, many couples file for divorce just after New Year celebrations. A surge in the filing of divorce cases on the first Monday after New Year's Day has been reported, with this trend continuing for the rest of the month.

Reports stated that divorce lawyers see a significant increase in the number of people seeking divorce advice and filing divorce cases at the beginning of the year. According to divorce attorneys, a 30 percent increase in the number of divorce filings is experienced, beginning in January and continuing until early March.

The trend is not limited to the United States. According to a recent survey of 2,000 spouses in the United Kingdom, one in every five couples plans to divorce after the Christmas and New Year holidays. The same study also found that during January, instructions to lawyers to file for divorce increase by 27 percent compared with an average month of activity.

According to reports, various reasons could exist for the surge in the number of divorce filing cases. Perhaps some spouses feel that it would not be nice to file for divorce during the Christmas season. Another reason may be that unhappy couples might want to have one last Christmas with their families intact before filing for divorce, so they wait until January.

The report also stated that the turn of the calendar to a new year also causes a surge in the number of people accessing online dating. Between December and February, the largest dating website in the United States sees a 38 percent jump in registrations. According to a study, now one-third of marriages happening in the United States can be traced to a couple meeting online.
