How is the amount of Massachusetts child support determined?

Massachusetts child support is the amount of money one parent, the non-custodial parent, pays to another, the custodial parent, to ensure that the couple's child will be able to live comfortably, as the child did before the parents were separated. Child support is designed with the best interest of the child in mind.

The amount of child support varies based on the income reported by the parents, as well as other related factors. The amount is calculated according to Massachusetts state guidelines using a maximum $250,000 gross combined income of the parents. Calculations change in instances where the parents' combined income exceeds $250,000. If the parents make considerably lower than this amount, they will still be obligated to pay child support and their amounts will be figured accordingly.

Other factors that can affect support calculations include child care costs and health insurance expenses. If a parent pays for a caregiver to be in charge of the child while the parent is at work, this cost is subtracted from that parent's gross income. Insurance costs for medical, dental and vision policies can also be deducted from gross income. In the case of health care coverage, both parties may insure the child and deduct the payments.

Parents who need to explore child support options may benefit from speaking to a Massachusetts family law attorney. Attorneys are able to explain the lengthy support guidelines and can help parents determine their reportable income and expenses. A family law attorney will work to ensure their clients pay a fair and reasonable amount of support so their children can live happy, comfortable lives.
