Massachusetts parents may wish to understand child support

The financial aspects of divorce can often be a major concern for Massachusetts residents who are going through separation. Though the court costs and fees may only be applicable while the case is proceeding, it is important for parents to understand that other financial obligations will continue after a divorce. Child support is one form of financial obligation that parents will need to contend with after separating.

Though child support may be a point of contention for parents, it is important for them to understand why the payments are needed. Caring for children is an understandably expensive endeavor, and one income may not be enough to provide fully for what children need. Therefore, support payments can be a way for both parents to help care for their children even after divorce.

Unfortunately, many support agreements may not come about as smoothly as hoped. Some parents may disagree on whether shared custody should be allowed, and as a result, difficulties could arise if one parent wishes to maintain primary custody. If a parent is awarded primary custody, that parent may be entitled to child support from the noncustodial parent. Subsequently, agreements will have to be arranged regarding the amount of support deemed appropriate.

Even though both parents likely love their children and want to provide for them, arguments about child support are not unusual. However, the needs of the children should be the top consideration when amounts are being determined. More information on how payment amounts are configured in Massachusetts could help parents better understand their agreements and obligations.
