Parental relationships should play a role in child custody

When Massachusetts parents are married, the idea that children belong more to one parent than the other may seem a bit strange. However, when parents are going through divorce and child custody proceedings, that idea may no longer seem out of the ordinary. Unfortunately, many fathers may feel that court systems automatically believe that mothers have more stake in their children than fathers do. As a result, fathers may feel that they need to fight harder for custody.

Fathers’ rights activists are becoming more prevalent in custody news as of late. More fathers believe that they are still not being given a fair chance when it comes to the decisions made by court systems concerning custody agreements. This could be due to the fact that more fathers hope to have a more active role in their children’s lives than what has been considered acceptable in the past.

Because family law standards vary from state to state, it is difficult for fathers across the country to feel that they are being considered fairly. However, some representatives believe that the concern should be less on whether fathers are getting more custody and more on which parent, regardless of gender, is more fit to care for the children. On the other hand, there are sectors that believe that more focus and consideration should be given solely to fathers.

One aspect that many parents are often able to agree on is that they want what is best for their children. Therefore, what should be considered during child custody proceedings is the true relationships between the parents and the children. Because approaches to custody could be shifting, Massachusetts parents may wish to learn what it could mean for their situation.
