A 47-year-old man identified on the Massachusetts Department of Revenue's (MDR) 'Top 10 Deadbeat Dads' list has been arrested for allegedly not paying child support for six years. He was found in Las Vegas and taken to Massachusetts on one count of abandonment of a child without support and one count of failure to comply with a support order.
Back in his home state, the man entered a not guilty plea before a judge. The prosecutor alleged he owes almost $78,000 in child support, including interest and penalties. The mother of his 16-year-old child says he has not supported his daughter or even seen her. According to the news report, the father has remarried and lives in Las Vegas.
The prosecutor asked the judge to set bail at $20,000, while the man's defense told the judge his client could pay $5,000 and discuss a plan for repayment. The judge agreed to the high bail after the prosecutor urged the father wouldn't come back to the courtroom without being in handcuffs. The prosecutor also revealed the man had a record of assault and battery and operating under the influence charges. He had also defaulted on some of his warrants. The 47-year-old was not able to post the full amount. Authorities say most of the other men on the MDR poster have been apprehended as well.
In this situation, the state stepped up to help those who have been waiting to receive child support payments for years. Unfortunately, there are many parents still waiting to get repaid for missed payments by non-custodial parents. In Massachusetts, a qualified attorney can help plan a course of action toward getting child support payments mandated by law.
