Most people believe a marriage that can span nearly two decades is destined to last forever. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Couples in Massachusetts who split after a lengthy marriage join the ranks of a growing number of couples from all over the United States. For example, rock star John Mellencamp recently finalized his divorce from model, Elaine Irwin.
The couple had been married for 18 years. In terms of Hollywood marriages, 18 years seems like a lifetime. The couple is said to have reached an amicable agreement in terms of both property division and child custody. As it stands, the pair will share custody of their two sons (ages 17 and 16), and primary physical custody will go to Irwin. Mellencamp has also agreed to pay for the education of the two boys.
It is reported that the pair first separated in December of last year.
Irwin has gained notoriety over the years as the face of various makeup brands and Mellencamp is widely known for his successful music career. Mellencamp filed for divorce in January.
Regardless of the length of a marriage, sometimes reconciliation is not possible. Even for people who split amicably, the process of divorce can be painful and emotionally draining. Emotions are even more amplified when children are involved.
Massachusetts residents who are going through a difficult separation may benefit from a consultation with an understanding legal counselor, who will offer not only legal advice, but also provide insight to options that are in the client's best interest.
