Putting an end to a Massachusetts child support order -- Part I

A child support order in Massachusetts or anywhere else in the United States may remain valid for a certain period of time. Typically, the child support order ends on a certain date or when the child becomes an adult. Once the child support order comes to an end, there is no need to pay it anymore.

However, sometimes, it is not clear when the child support order will end. That is particularly true when a child support order is part of a more serious situation, for example, divorce. In a divorce ruling, a decision regarding child support may also be made. There is no specific mention of the end date of the child support order.

Confusion regarding the end date may also arise when two parents disagree on when the child support payments should end. One parent may feel that the child has become financially independent while the other may not agree.

If the parents are not in agreement about the end date of the child support order, it may be best to consult a judge. Parents may feel that it is best to end a child support order, and then they may approach the judge. That typically occurs when the spouses decide to live together under the same roof.

When former spouses want to end the child support order, the court will want to determine why the support order should be stopped. There are several possible reasons. For example, a child support order may be stopped if the child is no longer living with the parent who is receiving the support. Second, if the child starts living with the parent who is paying child support, the child support order may be stopped.
