Massachusetts dads may look for career, child support changes

When many Massachusetts individuals think of child custody, they may adhere to the notion that a mother should become the custodial parent. However, this ideal discredits a significant number of fathers who are just as willing and capable of taking care of their children. Unfortunately, there are still a considerable number of cases in which the mother is awarded custody of the children, and the father is left with child support payments and occasional visits.

Many people know that societal expectation still largely consider men the breadwinners of families. Consequently, it can seem strange to some that fathers would rather spend time with their children than take on extra work to make support payments. Unfortunately, there are a number of situations in which fathers must work long hours in order to make the required payments, which can lead to difficulty in supporting themselves and less time with their children.

In a move that seems to go against what society expects, some fathers opt to change their career paths in order to spend more time with their children. When such a change takes place, it can mean that changes in child support payments may also be necessary. Because a father takes on more of a parenting role and has also potentially decreased his income, he may wish to look into lowering his monthly payment amount.

Though many parents may wish to pursue child support modifications, they can at times be difficult to come by. As a result, a parent should go into the situation as prepared as possible in order to hopefully meet the best outcome. Information on child support and custody laws in Massachusetts could help a parent better understand how to go about seeking modifications that would better suit their circumstances.
